Once in a while you hear about transparent smartphones,
although various smartphone manufacturers have been developing this advanced
technology for decades, there are as yet no devices available that are fully
transparent.
Samsung is working on a transparent see-through smartphone,
which I will tell you in detail but.
In January 2020, Samsung
electronics filed a utility patent with the united states patent, and trademark
office. The patent was published on august 27, 2020 and describes the
technology needed to create a transparent smartphone. Alternatively this
technology could also be applicable to other consumer electronics products such
as, a TV, monitor, laptop, and game console as a basis, an oled display is used
which is characterized by low power consumption high brightness, and a faster
response time than conventional LCD displays.
The O LED screen is equipped with
a transparent luminous display panel, through which light can shine, thus
content can be displayed on the transparent screen, while users can
simultaneously see through the phone, it can be a flat display, but also a
flexible screen that can bend, fold, and a roll according to the patent
description.
It is a technically defined
patent that goes into great detail about the different layers, and components
required to achieve transparency, the patent images show a modern smartphone
with narrow bezels, and the large transparent screen, each pixel on the phone's
display would allow light to pass through it, Effectively rendering the screen
transparent,
In Samsung's patent drawing,
shows that transparent screen resembles a window through which the holder's
hand can be seen, only the bezels seem to be opaque, Dreams of transparent
Phones, aren't new, LG had a crack in 2009 with the gd 900, but it only
featured a transparent keypad, Sony Ericsson followed up, with The X Peria
Pureness, which too its credit, did feature a transparent display, but it
wasn't very good though. The company would need to find a way of housing the
battery, and other components, so as to not interfere with the transparent
display, or somehow make those elements transparent too.
But developing a transparent
phone, It's a problem, which was demonstrated by taiwanese firm polytron
technologies transparent phone in 2013. the S D card, and ribbon cables were
still visible despite the phone's largely transparent body, these patents
rarely develop into mainstream devices, so don't expect Samsung to launch a transparent
galaxy S, or note series shortly. But the search for the next big smartphone
innovation is taking companies to extreme level.
So that is all the latest Samsung news, as
always let me know your thoughts in the comment section below
Last year Lenovo showed us a prototype of a totally new type
of PC. A full on Windows 10 computer, with a foldable OLED display.
Now it's C E S 2020, the company is telling us what the
final shipping version of that product. it's called, the ThinkPad X1 Fold.
So the hardware hasn't changed that much from before,
there's still a 13-inch OLED screen that folds, there's still a wireless
keyboard, that come with the whole package, and it still looks kind a
leather-bound book when you fold it up.
What has changed, is Lenovo's work on the software side of
things. Now the X1 Fold runs regular Windows 10 which really isn't designed for
these kinds of foldable screens. So Lenovo has had to give you the ability to,
for example, pin certain apps on different sides of the screen, and there's a
little icon in the taskbar that you can click to do this. If you use the device
in portrait mode when it's unfolded you can click the same icon and that gives
you the option to bring up an on-screen keyboard, and then if you fold the
laptop on top of each other it's like you have a mini laptop with a touchscreen
keyboard. Or you can use the wireless-Bluetooth keyboard, put it on top of the
onscreen keyboard and then you have a miniature laptop with little keys.
Alternatively you can unfold the laptop to its full screen,
and use the kickstand on the back, and use the keyboard wirelessly. There's
also a separate stand that'll ship a little bit later, that holds the monitor
up like an easel, and you can use the Bluetooth keyboard below it. Lenovo is
also planning a version of the device that runs on Windows 10 X, which might
actually be a better fit. That's the version of Windows that Microsoft is
working on, and it's designed specifically for dual-screen devices, and
foldable devices.
Microsoft has it's own Surface Neo coming up this year,
which runs Windows 10X.
So that might be a better fit for the X1 Fold. The only
problem is it's not going to ship until after the Windows 10 version.
So the X1 Fold screen is being made by LG Display. The two
companies say they've been working on this product for more than four years
together, and Lenovo is really confident about the product's durability in
particular. They spent a lot of time showing us all the complicated components
that go into the hinge design. Obviously there have been some pretty high
profile failures in this product category already, so there's a reason to be
skeptical, but you know the company is confident in its design.
There's some neat touches on the device, there's a slight
crease in the display when you fold it open, but it's not super visible, and
although there's a gap when you fold it together, between the two sections of
the screen that actually gets filled up by the keyboard which is kind of a nice
touch.
In terms of specs, the X1 Fold is using a new type of
processor from Intel, but we can't go into detail on yet. Otherwise there's 8
gigabytes of RAM, up to a terabyte of SSD storage, and Lenovo is claiming up to
11 hours of battery life. So overall this is looking like a pretty cool, pretty
experimental device.
But the problem with experimental tech products is that,
companies charge high money for those products, and this one is gonna cost
quite a lot. Lenovo is shipping it in the middle of this year for around
$2,500. Which is a lot of money for any kind of laptop, or tablet, especially
one that you know, has potential questions about durability and so on
surrounding it. That said, we are super excited and looking forward to spending
a lot more time with it, and hopefully we should be able to do more experiments
with it, towards the middle of the year.
So yeah, this is just one of many weird and
wacky PC concepts we're gonna see this week.
Today I've got something, that I'm
certain you've never seen before, I look at many smartphones, and I'm always on
the hunt for that next futuristic form factor, and I think that's what we're
about to find out inside of this box right here, now first glance you think to
yourself that's just the standard smartphone, then you start playing with the
packaging. You notice something is a little bit different, and when you pull
the phone out, that's when things go to the next level.
There it is my friends, this is the L G
Wing. In a sea of the same basic bar type design phones this is something truly
unique, the swivel action feels mechanically solid, that's smooth, when you pop
this baby open they're going to turn some heads, more than that, this swivel
design changes the functionality of the phone itself.
Starting with the home screen, it's
been completely redesigned, swivel mode also gives you a nice balanced grip.
But This design is perfect for people who like to watch a lot of video on their
phone like I do, like when you're watching a video on your phone, and you touch
the screen by accident, the controls pop up, or when you get a text, or call
right at the most crucial scene. no more, the different grip means, nothing
interferes with the main screen, and grip lock button prevents accidental
touches on the second screen.
Another problem this dual screen setup
solves, is when you're using your phone for GPS, and then you get a call, now
you have the GPS on the main screen, and the call on the second screen, no
screen interference, no missed turned.
The main screen for your main task, and
the second screen for your calls messages, and notifications, its simple and
hassle free.
It's easy to tell from the design, that
the wing was designed for comfortable viewing without interference. So it's
only natural to the wing for sporting appeal that display.
When the display turns on, what's the
first thing you notice, well you notice what's not there, no hole cut out, no
notch, just 6.8 inches of pure uninterrupted P O lead real estate. Despite
having 2 stacks screens LG's P OLED tech makes the wing thinner, and lighter
than you'd expect.
So then you got to be asking yourself,
Hey, no holds punch, no notch, where is the front camera, well it's a pop up
camera and it's 32 mega pixels. in the back you have a 64 megapixel main
shooter into ultralights, a 12 megapixel ultra wide for shooting in swivel
mode, and a 13 megapixel ultra wide for basic mode. Now you can do a whole
dialogue scene in one take, record the action you want and your reaction at the
same time. if you happen to drop the phone by accident check out what happens
in slow motion.
For all your video files the LG wings
comes with Gimbal camera features, it has 6 motion sensors inside, and
stabilization software that can compensate for shakes, and bombs in 3 axis,
that means your shot will come out silky smooth, the wings form factor also
gives you better balance in a more natural grip for shooting, and just like a gimbal
cameras you're familiar with, you have the joy stick on screen to tilt and pan
the camera manually, and also the 4 Gimbal shooting modes, follow, pan follow, F
P V, and lock mode.
now having a gimbal attachment is great,
but you have to carry it around and set it up, and by the time you're ready to
shoot maybe that moment is already passed, this is a lot faster. Now the
specialized functions are great, but where I think this phone really shines, is
in how useful it can be in everyday use, like when you want to search while
you're watching Netflix, or following along to a cooking video, and setting the
timer at the same time. multi-tasking feels easy and natural with this set up,
look how many different things you can do, and if you have a favorite
combination of apps you always used together, you can pair them on the second
screen to let you open them with one touch.
And what makes the wind stand out from
other dual screen phones is the fact that, when you don't want to use the
second screen you can make it disappear in a snap, now you’re in basic mode.
This type of daily use the hardware has been solidly built. Swivel mechanism,
and swivel action has been tested over 200000 times, so it works smoothly for
years to come, it also has a water repellent coating that makes it water
resistant for daily life, plus on the main screen you've got an in display
fingerprint sensor, even when using your normal apps the second screen makes
things easier, especially for one handed use, there's nothing like the
convenience of having video playback controls ready on the second screen.
or
scrolling through the gallery on the second screen, while viewing the full
sized photo on the main screen, if you like making videos, editing video on the
wing is a breeze, by professional editors these 2 monitors, the wings two
screens make the controls feel less cramped, with all these great features you
don't want your data speed lagging behind, that's why the wing is 5 G enabled,
and its got enough battery power to last you all day.
so
this smartphone obviously it's much different, it's a completely new approach,
I always appreciate ambition from manufacturers, yes it will work as a standard
smartphone in this slab format, but when you pop it open, obviously you can
tell you're dealing with something quite different. Is this going to be the
smartphone for everyone?, I don't know, but maybe we're looking at the future.
